Chaps were originally intended to protect the legs of cowboys and other ranch workers on a cattle drive from the frequent contact with brush, thorns, cactuses and other hazards that were often encountered when working with cattle, horses and other livestock. They help to protect riders' legs from scraping on brush, injury from thorns of cacti, sagebrush, mesquite and other thorny vegetation. While a lot of fun costumes creatively use chaps, they still have a place in a classic cowboy costume, which is what you see represented here.
A lot of people are challenged by wanting a costume accessory that looks and feels like real leather, but they don’t want to bear the crisis of conscience that comes with transforming animal hides into human clothing. That’s why these costume cowboy chaps are made from high-quality polyester-based materials that look, feel and respond like real leather, without harming a single animal in the process. They also tend to be much easier to clean and maintain than real leather.
